I’ve been there—the kind of darkness that feels like it might swallow you whole. The kind where the weight of grief, pain, or uncertainty feels unbearable. When I lost my husband in a plane crash, my children were just 1 and 2 years old. I was broken, raw, and scared, carrying the crushing responsibility of not only surviving but being strong for them.
In the midst of that darkness, fitness became my lifeline. It wasn’t about fitting into jeans or chasing a number on a scale—it was about survival. I’d lace up my running shoes, let the tears stream down my face, and pound the pavement as if each step might help me outrun my pain. I’d stand in the gym, lift weights that felt impossibly heavy, and somehow find strength I didn’t know I had. With every rep, every mile, and every drop of sweat, I fought my way back to myself.
Fitness saved me because it gave me a sense of control when everything else felt like chaos. It taught me to embrace discomfort, to lean into the hard stuff, and to channel my pain into power. It reminded me that even when I felt weak, I was capable of incredible strength. And it became my therapy, my outlet, my way of releasing the emotions I couldn’t hold inside.
But fitness isn’t just about physical strength—it’s about emotional resilience. It’s about showing up for yourself when it feels like the world is crumbling around you. It’s a reminder that no matter how dark things get, you have the power to choose: one step forward, one moment of effort, one act of self-care.
I’m sharing this because I know I’m not alone in this journey. If you’re in the thick of it right now—grieving, struggling, or just trying to find your way—I want you to know this: fitness can be your light. It can be your outlet, your therapy, your hope. You don’t have to do it perfectly; you just have to start. Show up, move your body, and let it remind you of the strength that’s already within you.
Fitness saved me. It gave me my life back.
And I believe with all my heart that it can do the same for you.
Go start,
Michelle
