In 2018 I felt like someone, or something had taken all my inner light, my energy, my fire, and fight and hid it from me. It was difficult for me to come to terms with, typically I have a strong desire to fight for myself and my purpose in the world. When that desire fades, it hurts more than just your mood; it hurts every aspect of your being.
What I came to realize throughout a challenging year was that all the same old tricks I’ve used in the past still work, but for whatever reason, I’d stopped using most of them. Finding your fire and bringing your energy back is an inside job and can’t be done with pharmaceutical drugs or quick fixes. You will have to do the work, but the good news is the work I’m going to ask you to do is not only easy, it feels good too. So, if your energy is low, your soul is exhausted, and our light has dimmed, here are a few things I’d like you to do today to find that inner fire.
It seems counterproductive when you are exhausted, but any movement is one of the very best ways to come back to life and help your soul feel more rested. Start with even a short walk; it can make all the difference. If you REALLY want to come back to life, do yourself a favor and work up a solid SWEAT. Move as hard as you can for about 20 minutes and watch your entire world start to open up. Not only does that movement circulate blood around your body, but it also lights up your brain with potent chemicals that change your mood and help you bring energy and light back to your body. Motion is lotion, and your body needs and wants to move.
As a culture, we live in a state of constant fight or flight. This low energy center drains you and lowers your frequency to primal instincts like fear and anger. Just going for walking meditation or sitting in a peaceful spot in your home and focusing on simple meditation can make all the difference. Imagine yourself sitting in a ship at sea in the middle of a violent storm, the waves are crashing all around you, and the storm threatens to take over you. Next, imagine yourself driving down safely one hundred feet below the surface where the ocean is calm, and the wind and rain can no longer be felt. That is the power of meditation for your brain. By diving down and finding the peace, you quiet the storm and bring peaceful energy back to your life. Many people say they don’t know how to meditate, but thankfully we live in a day where you can find thousands of quick and free guided meditations on youtube or with free apps like Calm or Head Space. No need to buy anything, seek out a free meditation and give it a try.
Just deep breathing for a few minutes a day is one of the most powerful ways to reignite your inner fire and find some lasting deep peace. By breathing deeply, you regulate your parasympathetic nervous system, and your body will begin to relax. When you turn on your parasympathetic nervous system, your breathing slowers, heart rate drops, and your blood pressure lowers, in other words, your body finds a state of calm and healing. We are born breathing, and it is critical to life, yet we never focus on it, and we never practice it, regardless of how essential it is for our overall health. Today, try to practice some deep breathing for just a few minutes. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds and repeat several times over and notice what it does for your body and your soul.
The beauty of nearly everything I’m suggesting is that it can all be coupled with beautiful music to help you rest your inner self. Music is healing, restful, and restorative, and yet we don’t listen enough. Our lives are so busy with noise that we need to spend a little more time connecting with things that bring us peace and calm. Music has been studied as a form of emotional therapy for suffering and has been proven to have lasting benefits.
Move
Mediate
Breath Deep
Listen to Music
Do it all in nature, and you have a magical combo for your ultimate healing.
We are organic creatures that need fresh air, sunshine, and connectivity to the earth. Science tells us we NEED these things, yet 90% of us never leave a building other than to walk to our cars each day. We need a negative charge from physically connecting to the earth. We need the sunshine to keep our melatonin at optimal levels; we need fresh air to heal and restore.
Of course, many additional actions work very well, such as; therapy, art, animals, reading, etc. A common theme is investing time in yourself and emotionally supportive activities.
I want you to remember that you have the power right now to make a difference in your own life. Simple choices you make just today can take your life in a new and more positive direction. The hardest part is merely starting, working up the bravery to start and building on what you do day after day. Consistency is critical, and the reward is a more peaceful, energetic, and happy existence.
You will have to do the work, but you get just one life, so the work is worth the effort.
